Frequently Asked Questions

When and how often should adults get screened for osteoporosis/osteopenia after being diagnosed with celiac disease?

60% of celiac patients at the time of diagnosis have abnormal bone mass; therefore you should be screened at diagnosis. If bone density is normal at diagnosis, proceed with routine screening with your primary care physician. If abnormal, then get re-screened after you’ve been on a gluten-free diet for one year to see if there is improvement. In some cases, you may need to see a bone specialist if osteoporosis hasn’t improved while on a gluten-free diet. January, 2013
